Ten Years of International Shipping on the Northern Sea Route: Trends and Challenges

Analysis of detailed statistics shows remarkable fluctuations in the volume and composition voyages on Northern Sea Route (NSR) along northern coast Russia since international use began 2010. There has been strong growth destination shipping between Arctic ports outside region, but transit Pacific Atlantic not experienced many had anticipated. Explanations are found market conditions as well management NSR, with important lessons for future development different segments. Shipping companies from several countries took part period up to 2019, they seem have become less central current phase NSR shipping, which is dominated by transport hydrocarbons out Arctic. expects pick later. However, alone cannot determine traffic: it industry that will assess balance factors conditions, conclude if when shorter routes safe, efficient, reliable, environmentally sound economically viable comparison other routes.
